End of heat or Chushu is the 14th of the 24 solar terms of the lunar calendar. This year it starts on August 22. This solar term indicates the change of temperature. “Chu” means stop, showing that the burning hot is fading away and there will be no summer heat since this day. From this solar term on, the temperature in most parts of China will decrease gradually. Chushu is not only different from the solar term of lesser heat and great heat, but also different from lesser cold and greater cold. It is the solar term that represents the transition from hot to cold.
Enjoying Nature
After the heat, people can enjoy the scenery as it changes gradually from summer to autumn. There is a saying that goes, “Enjoying the clouds of various forms in July and August (lunar month).” Therefore, people go out and enjoy the nature and at the same time welcoming the autumn. Even the clouds in the sky scatter around forming different shapes, unlike the dense clouds during the Greater Heat.
The Fishing Season Festival
For fishermen, the End of Heat is a season of harvest. During this period, the Fishing Season Festival is held in regions along the coastline of the East China Sea in Zhejiang province. The festival is held on the day when the fishing ban ends, and fishermen can start fishing again. Due to high temperatures in the sea, stocks of fish remain and become mature. People can enjoy many kinds of seafood during this period.
"The clouds are scattering from the Greater Heat, and a cool breeze is rising." After the End of Heat, the coolness of autumn is beginning to permeate, and the autumn breeze is gradually rising. To embrace the coolness and breeze to the fullest; to reap the gifts of heaven and earth, the fruits of labor, and the joy of harvest. The scorching heat has passed, but there will still be a short-term of hot weather during this period. It has not really entered the cold weather yet. The real coolness usually comes after the solar term of white dew.
