China Cultural Center Den Haag, in collaboration with the Hijs Hokij Ice Hockey Club, hosted a unique Chinese New Year celebration at De Uithof, the largest ice sports center in The Hague. The event featured a traditional lion dance, bringing the festive spirit of Chinese New Year to the local community.
The host introduced the lion dance as a traditional Chinese New Year celebration symbolizing good fortune and prosperity. This year’s Chinese New Year falls on January 29 and marks the beginning of the Year of the Snake, which symbolizes wisdom, elegance, and prosperity in Chinese tradition. During the event, young ice hockey players and cultural center staff joined the lion dance performance, throwing Snake Year mascots to the audience. The lively music, energetic lion dance, and cheering crowd created a festive and joyful atmosphere in the ice rink.
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most significant traditional holiday in Chinese culture. Recently, UNESCO added the festival to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further recognizing its global cultural significance.
2025 marks the Year of the Snake in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar.
