On 28 October 2026, the China Cultural Center in The Hague hosted a screening and discussion of A Letter to Grandma, jointly organised with the Council of Chinese Schools in Europe, the Chinese School in The Hague and the Chinese School in Amsterdam. More than 60 guests attended, including teachers and students from Chinese language schools and members of the Chinese community in the Netherlands, many with family roots in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong Province.

In her welcome remarks, Wang Zheng, Director of the China Cultural Center in The Hague, introduced the film and its historical background. Through the story of an ordinary family, A Letter to Grandma explores the history of overseas Chinese communities through qiaopi — letters and remittances sent by Chinese emigrants to their families back home. These documents preserve personal memories of migration, family bonds and the enduring connection between overseas Chinese communities and their ancestral homeland.

The film deeply moved the audience, prompting an engaging discussion on family values, trust, cultural identity and the importance of Chinese language education. Several participants from the Chaoshan community shared how the stories reflected the experiences of their own ancestors. Teachers from Chinese language schools also discussed ways of incorporating qiaopi stories into language and cultural education, helping younger generations understand their family histories and multicultural identities.

Participants highlighted the importance of cultural activities in strengthening community connections and promoting mutual understanding between Chinese and Dutch communities. The event demonstrated the value of cooperation between cultural institutions, Chinese language schools and local community organisations. The China Cultural Center in The Hague will continue to support cultural exchange and create opportunities for dialogue and understanding between China and the Netherlands.
